Is It Colorism, Just a Dating Preference, or Both?

The conversation about colorism and people’s dating preferences is certainly NOT new. Black folks and other people of color have been talking about skin color and sexual attraction for generations. While I’m a firm believer that beauty exists across the spectrum of black and brown, I’ve witnessed my fair share of individuals with a “skewed” perception of attractiveness. Those people that are firm believers in the “light is right” mantra. They believe that being light-skinned grants a person an automatic qualification of beautiful, and that those of a darker tone have got to have some damn near flawless features in order to compete. And while people are ready to blast those that have a preference for the Halle Berry and Michael Ealy folks of the world, perhaps the offended should give those attracted to our lighter brothers and sisters a break.

Slavery Is Bigger than Libya… What You Can Do to Help Stop It

By now, most of you have been caught up to speed on the human rights violations occurring in Libya.  If you were anything like me, you found yourself confused by the reporting.  First, you couldn’t quite comprehend how slavery is an ongoing issue in 2017.  Second, you are in sheer disbelief that such a crime against humanity could have gone unreported for such a long time.  Especially, when you have news alerts going off on your phone multiple times a day and most of those alerts are related to Trump’s Twitter fingers. (Seriously, it’s gotten to the point where I get an alert from CNN and I’m like “what did he say now?”)

Again, if you were like me, once you moved past your state of confusion and frustration, you wanted answers on how to stop the problem. You wanted to know what organizations to call and donate money to.  You wanted to bombard Capitol Hill to force congressmen and women to stop talking about tax codes and loopholes, and start talking about American intervention.  Heck, some of you with a deep pocket and time to spare may have wanted to hop on the next flight abroad and be your own Batman-esque vigilante. The bottom line, some of you like me wanted to do more than hashtag activism.

Three Reasons I’m Actually “Thankful” for Trump!

While I might find this man to be morally reprehensible, culturally ignorant, politically unaware, and by all appearances completely narcissistic, today’s post is not actually a bash Trump session. In fact, I can’t believe I’m about to write this, but I think Trump should be thanked.  I know I sound foolish, or perhaps heavily medicated.  However, I do in fact credit Trump with a few “good things.” His political career has served as an eye-opener on three fronts.

Should We Be Mad about a Roots Reboot?

With the reboot of the classic Roots hitting airways this week, I’ve seen a number of posts on social media platforms and blogs bashing the miniseries and blacks recent depiction in film.  While I’ve admittedly not been the biggest supporter of this remake (I just feel certain projects should not be rebooted), I’m not against the miniseries for the same reasons most naysayers are.  But I most certainly understand the naysayers’ frustrations.

Why History Has Shown Us to Expect the Rise of Anti-Gay Laws

With the rash of state legislatures eager to pass bills that clearly disenfranchise members of the LGBT community, I thought I’d take the opportunity to call BS.  While I’m disgusted by the legislative actions of states like North Carolina, Mississippi, and almost Georgia, I can’t say I’m all that surprised. History in the U.S. has countless examples of what happens when this country finally takes steps toward equality for all.

Race to Blame for the State of American Politics

Despite record breaking turnout in some states’ primaries or caucuses, I for one find myself increasingly underwhelmed by this 2016 presidential race.  I’m sick of the media talking about Hillary’s emails, I’m tired of the back and forth pettiness between candidates, and I’m beyond over the ignorant and clownish phenomenon that is Donald Trump.  To be honest, American politics is slowly becoming a sick joke that I can’t believe is our reality.  And I’m left to wonder, where did it all go wrong?
